Mei Lanfang หรือ Forever Enthralled คืออัตชีวประวัติของ เหมยหลานฟาง นักอุปรากรจีนผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ ซึ่งตลอดระยะเวลากว่า 50 ปีบนเส้นทางสายนี้ เขาเป็นที่รู้จักและโด่งดังไปทั่วโลกจากการสวมบทบาทเป็นตัวละครหญิง

ช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 20 หลานฟาง (หยู่เส้าชุน) คือเด็กหนุ่มที่ถูกหล่อเลี้ยงขึ้นมา เพื่อสืบทอดตำนานการแสดงงิ้วประจำตระกูล เพียงแต่ว่ามุมมองของเขาในการพัฒนารูปแบบการแสดงนั้น ดูจะขัดแย้งกับคุณปู่และอาจารย์ของเขาที่ต้องการให้ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างเป็นไปตามครรลอง จนสุดท้ายแล้วเขาและอาจารย์ก็ได้กลายเป็นคู่แข่งกัน เพียงแต่มันไม่ใช่การแข่งขันที่มุ่งหวังเพื่อที่จะเอาชนะ มันเป็นการแข่งขันเพื่อเกียรติติยศและศักดิศรีในสิ่งที่เรียกว่า “ศิลปะ”

หลังจากที่เขาประสบความสำเร็จ และถูกเรียกขานว่า “นักอุปรากรที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในแผ่นดินจีน” เหมยหลานฟาง (หลี่หมิง) คือชายวัยกลางคนที่ต้องพบกับอุปสรรคอื่นๆ เช่น เรื่องความสัมพันธ์กับ เมิ้งเสี่ยวตง (จางซื่อยี่) เพื่อนนักอุปรากรที่เขารู้จัก, แต่งงาน, มีทายาท และหย่าร้างกัน, เรื่องที่เขาต้องนำเอาศิลปะอันล้ำค่าของจีนไปเผยแพร่ในโลกตะวันตกอย่างมหานครนิวยอร์ค และการรักษาเกียรติยศและสมบัติของชาวจีนทุกคนไว้ ระหว่างการยึดครองของญี่ปุ่นในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง

• ภาพยนตร์ที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากชีวิตของ เหมยหลานฟาง และยังเป็นภาพยนตร์ที่แจ้งเกิดอย่างเต็มตัวให้กับผู้กำกับ เฉินไค่เก๋อ ก็คือ Farewell My Concubine (1993) ซึ่งได้รับรางวัล Golden Palm จาก Cannes Film Festival และยังถูกเสนอเข้าชิงรางวัลออสการ์ในสาขาหนังต่างประเทศยอดเยี่ยม

• หยู่เส้าชุน นักแสดงดาวรุ่งผู้สวมวิญญาณเป็น เหมยหลานฟาง ในวัยหนุ่ม ได้รับเสียงชื่นชมอย่างล้นหลามจากทั้งผู้ชมและนักวิจารณ์ ซึ่งทำให้เขาได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงรางวัล Asian Film Awards ในสาขานักแสดงหน้าใหม่
